Diving how does scoring work

The diving events for the Tokyo Olympics take place at the Tokyo Aquatics Center, which has a meter-long pool for the swimming events in addition to the five-meter-deep diving pool. Divers say that rinsing off helps prevent keep their muscles warm and prevent cramping when they get out of the warm pool water and stand in the cooler air of the deck.

There are seven judges in individual diving events 11 in synchronized events. Each of them gives each dive a score of in half-point increments. Did you know: A diver taking off from the 10metre platform hits the water at 30mph and is in the air for less than three seconds. The score of each dive is calculated by first adding the total awards of the judges. It is customary to have five or seven judges — seven at certain major international events — and they only focus on how the dive has been performed.

The difficulty of a dive is denoted by its tariff. When calculating the overall score for a dive, the highest and lowest diving scores from the judges are ignored.

If there are five judges, the remaining three scores are multiplied by the tariff to give the dive score. Factors to be considered by the synchronised judges include: The approach; The take-off, including the similarity of height; The co-ordinated timing of the movements during the flight; The similarity of the angles of the entries; The comparative distance from the board and platform of entry; The co-ordinated timing of the entries Scoring When all seven judges in individual events have allocated a score for a dive, the two highest and two lowest scores will be eliminated and the remaining three scores totalled.
