Even as electric vehicles become more popular, there will likely be a demand for high-quality gasoline for a long time to come. Those who love their gasoline-powered machines tend to really love them, going so far as to even prompt Ford to create a gasoline-scented cologne for those who love the smell. However, there are some important nuisances and things to know about the utilization of non-ethanol gasoline. When gasoline was first produced via distillation back in , it was discarded along with other petroleum products as a useless byproduct of the creation of other oils and fuels such as kerosene.
It was not until that gasoline was noted as useful and valuable when the first automobiles hit the roads. The lead added lubrication to reduce wear on engine valves. Over time, the detrimental health effects of lead were revealed, and it was eliminated from gasoline and completely phased out in the United States by When petroleum refineries produce gasoline, it's an unfinished blendstock that must be mixed with other additives to meet the minimum requirements for spark-ignition engines.
It is at this point when the blendstock is shipped to a blending terminal that ethanol is generally added to the fuel. It also requires the United States' use of renewable fuel including ethanol every year until it reaches 36 billion gallons by This is the result of two main factors- first, the desire for the EPA to control emissions and create a more clean-burning fuel for vehicles.
Thanks for the question! My question is how long can ethanol free gas sit before it is a problem. To get straight to the point someone gave me a bunch of free gas but they said it has been sitting for over a year. Thank you for your time. Even being ethanol free gas will still go bad. I have been using av gas with no problems but it is now near impossible to get. It sits for long periods of time between use.
What is recommended to keep starting and running problems to a minimum. Thanks for the advice. Skip to Main Content. Search for: Search Now. Login My Cart Toggle Dropdown. Back to Blog. Posted by: Erik Bjornstad. This seems like a rather strange question. Is ethanol-free gas bad for your car? Well, technically, yes it is. I mean, it may not be exactly the same because there are all sorts of modern detergents and additives that get developed over the years. So why ask what would seem to be such a simple question? We know not the contents of the human heart…. I mean…. People are used to thinking about the gas they buy as being ethanol gasoline.
